- He was attacked by three men
- What happened here?!!
-  The train was late and Mattiewent to talk to the stationmaster and left Weaver in the wagon alone. Three drunk men came out of the hotel and said offensive things to Weaver, so he answered back.
- "They called me nigger."
- "Three to one, Weaver? For Gods sake, why didn't you just keep quiet?" 
- The three drunk men then started beating up Weaver just because he actually standed up for himself.
- But why Mr. Sperry It's not fair.
- From tomorrow on, you're to stay in the kitchen. You can wash dishes and mop floors and do whatever else Cook can find for you until your face heals.
- John Denio heard the noise of weaver getting beat, so he ran out, and broke it up.  Cook and Mattie also ran out to see what all the noise was about. They were both shocked and confused about what happened.
- Three more months, I'm gone from here. Once I get through Columbia, once I'm a lawyer, ain't no one ever going to call me boy or nigger or Sam. Or hit me. And if they do, I'll make sure they go to jail. "I'll find myself a new place. A better place than this one. We both will, won't we, Matt?"
- Yes, we will
- After explaining everything that happened, to Mr. Sperry, he was very upset. Everyone was confused why he couldn't have just kept quiet, even after Weaver explained what the white men called him. 
- Mr. Sperry decided to keep Weaver in the Kitchen until is face heals. This was unfair to Weaver since he won't be able to make as much money as he would if he was working outside of the kitchen.
- After Mr. Sperry, Cook, and John left it was just Mattie and Weaver left alone. Weaver started talking about the future and how he'll become a lawyer with a new place to live.  He then asked Matie that they both will go to college and have a better life and Mattie responded with yes, even though she plans to stay and be with Royal.
