  • The Battle Of The Somme July 1st 1916 - November 18th 1916
  • Bruh they knew we were coming!
  • The Battle of the Somme, fought in northern France, was one of the bloodiest battles of WW1. "The advantage is always with the defender. But the Allies are committed to more attacks. They're determined to liberate the parts of France and Belgium that were occupied by Germany in the first months of the war." The allies agreed to launch an attack in the summer of 1916.
  • Their were three lines of trenches: fire; support; and reserve; connected by communication. British assumed that a lengthy bombardment would destroy barbed wire defenses and eliminate the German front line.
  • Keep a steady pressure on the Somme battle!
  • At 7.20 am, 19 mines were detonated under the Hawthorn Ridge, which was the German machine gun position. Many German soldiers were killed in the explosion but reserve soldiers had moved machine guns to the edge of the crater caused by the explosion, and fired on the British attack. The British soldiers had ran into "no mans land" to advance farther but were mowed down by Germans. This had killed many of British soldiers in a very quick amount of time.
  • 12,000 German Casualties
  • 7,000 French Casualties
  • Most casualties were men in their late teens or early twenties.
  • 57,000 British casualties on first day of battle alone.
  • The Germans had hacked the British lines so that they could hear what they were talking about. "This caused the British officers to turn to messengers; flag-signals; light-signals; and even homing pigeons which none of them were completely reliable."
  • The British did not break through the German lines on 1st July, General Sir Douglas Haig told them to keep going. The troops did their best, thousands were lost on both sides while getting nowhere.
  • Wear down the enemy troops!
  • In conclusion I think that the Germans won the FIRST DAY of the Battle of Somme because the allied troops did not even adavnce but they had many casualties. The Germans also had a very thought through plan of how to defend and were already prepared.
  • July 1st 1916 becomes the bloodiest day inthe history of the British Army.
