Hi there! I'm Poppy the Hedgehog! Today, I'm going to tell you all about hedgehogs and how they came to be prickly domesticated animals!
Hedgehogs first evolved in eastern Europe. Over 15 million years ago! we were considered pests to other animals and farmers crops. Even though we are the oldest species of mammals on the planet, we've only been truly domesticated since the 1980's! but in 4000 BC, people would keep us as food hedgehogs and EAT US!!! ScArY
LITTER BEARING: hedgehogs average litter size is four or five young, though can be as many as seven. However, they usually only wean two or three successfully. The mother is liable to desert or even eat hoglets if she is disturbed.
SPECIES: there are 17 different species of hedgehogs, and they range from different qull sizes, and weight. Erinaceus, Paraechinus, Mesechinus, Atelerix and Hemiechinus. They live across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia
DId you know that we are mainly used to keep away garden pests? both the african pygmy hedgehog AND the desert hedgehog are used to keep away small insects and smaller mammals ike shrews and small mice. (we don't eat them however. even though we are omnivores)
