- The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy
- In The Monsters are Due on Maple street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is that mankind are their own worst enemy. First of all, in page 76, in the beginning Les Goodman's car suddenly started. Nothing else was working on Maple Street so people became suspicious of him and thought Les Goodman was the alien. According to man 1, "He got the car started somehow. He got his car started!" This proves that the theme is man kind are their own worst enemy because close friends of Goodman turned their back on him. They blamed him, and they became enemies of Goodman. Second, in page 82 people saw a black figure in the distance. They thought the figure was an alien. Charlie got a gun and shot at it. But the black figure was Pete Van Horn. It was found out that Charlie killed Pete Van Horn. According to Charlie, "But... But I didn't know who he was. I certainly didn't know who he was. He comes walking out of the darkness-How am I supposed to know who he was?" This proves that the theme is mankind are their own worst enemy. Because of Charlie's fears and worries, he killed a friend of his own. Pete Van Horn's death is because of mankind. Finally, in page 85, after people started blaming Charlie for killing Pete Van Horn. They started to hurt Charlie and and destroy his house. Then, Charlie blamed it on Tommy and said that he and his family was the aliens. According to Charlie, "Its...Its the kid. It's Tommy. He's the one." This proves that the theme is mankind is their own worst enemy. First of all, the people who used to be friendly neighbors became a mob and hurt Charlie and destroyed his house. Second, to get out of trouble, Charlie blamed a kid which was Tommy, and his family that they were aliens. In the Monsters are Due on Maple Street, the main theme is mankind is their own worst enemy.
