We're free at last! Haiti is ours!
No more slavery!
When Spain and England tried to invade Haiti, the French government freed the slaves so they could be used as an army against them. However, when Napoleon took power in France, he reintroduced slavery in Haiti to get more money for his war efforts, but the Haitian former slaves successfully resisted. In 1804, Haiti proclaimed its independence from France as a republic. The former slaves were now in charge and the white people were kicked off the island since none of them wanted to end slavery. In Haiti’s constitution, all citizens were given the right to life, liberty, property, and to petition the government. The revolution also gave strength to the anti-slavery movements among European and American peoples.

After the French revolution began, the grand blancs were admitted into the National Assembly, the new French government. The petit blancs gained citizenship after fighting the grand blancs in a civil war, but were angry that the free blacks also convinced the National Assembly they should be given French citizenship. This led the petit blancs to attack free blacks.

Toussaint L'Ouverture
The slaves took advantage of the situation and rebelled in August 1791. Toussaint L'Ouverture, a general and former slave, became leader of the rebellion by 1794.
