Search For Life Final Project - Abigail Fisher

Storyboard Text

  • Skluzavka: 1
  • Are you ready for your mission to Planet AZY98B?
  • Yes! I can't wait to explore it and hopefully find intelligent life. The last planet I went to only had bacteria, so boring
  • This could be the planet we've been searching for. Good luck!
  • Skluzavka: 3
  • Mission control copies. Look for liquid water when you land
  • Four days later
  • There it is! Planet AZY98B! And it looks to be right in the habitable zone, not too hot and not too cold
  • Does it look to be geologically active?
  • Skluzavka: 4
  • Lava! This planet is definitely geologically active
  • I wonder if it has an atmosphere, I'm going to run some tests on my spaceship
  • Skluzavka: 5
  • Any sign of an atmosphere?
  • Negative
  • What about a magnetic field?
  • Negative again
  • How fast is the planet rotating?
  • It appears to complete one rotation every five days, so very slowly
  • Alright, come on home then. There likely isn't life there
  • Skluzavka: 6
  • Welcome home!
  • Thanks! Why did you ask how fast the planet is rotating?
  • How so?
  • Skluzavka: 7
  • We believe that a planet must have an atmosphere in order to host life
  • The sun emits radiation that strips atmospheres off planets unless there's something to protect it
  • The magnetic field deflects the charged particles (solar wind) towards the poles of the planet, and thus the atmosphere is stronger than it would be without a magnetic field
  • But what does that have to do with a planet's rotational speed?
  • Skluzavka: 8
  • In order to have a magnetic field, a planet must first have a molten core, which we saw for AZY98B through its geologic activity
  • Rotating once every five days is not fast enough to induce a magnetic field, hence its atmosphere being very weak to non-existent
  • Without an atmosphere, it's unlikely that AZY98B can harbor life, so we must keep searching
  • Skluzavka: 9
  • Let's go see what the next planet on our search list is
  • Skluzavka: 0
  • Rotational speed is important for determining if a planet can host life
  • For a lot of planets, magnetic fields are what protect the atmosphere from solar wind that can strip it away
  • It must also be rotating relatively quickly so that the charged particles can induce a magnetic force, and thus the planet can have a magnetic field
