  • "But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free; one hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination..."
  • Pathos
  • "This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. "
  • Logos
  • "There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. "
  • King was stating facts, he was listing all the problems that were still going by after so many years of dealing with the conflict.
  • Ethos
  • "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir."
  • King is reminding everybody that many black people had to deal with many injustices just because of the reason that they were black. He's trying to show you that the people suffered.
  • Pathos
  • "I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality."
  • King is saying that there will never be peace because black people will always protest and fight back for their freedom and rights. There won't be peace until they get back what they deserve they won't stay quiet until they are heard.
  • Logos
  • When people signed the declaration of independence they were giving both black and white men the rights of life, liberty and have the opportunity to pursue happiness.
  • King is describing all the hardships that these black people had to do to seek their freedom. It makes you feel bad because some of the events they had to go though were very hard and tough.
  • When the Declaration of Independence was written and signed the black people never got their rights to anything of what the people signed and agreed to do. Black people were not given the rights that they deserved when the declaration of independence was signed.
  • "It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note in so far as her citizens of color are concerned. "
