- The Necklace is a short story by french writer Guy de Maupassant that was published in 1884

- Mathilde was one of those pretty and charming girls born, as if by an error of fate, into a family of clerks. and so she let herself be married to a minor official at the Ministry of Education.
- One day, her husband came home very happy. He had an invitation to a Party for both of them from the Minister of Public Instruction. He thought his wife would be happy, but she only got angry and threw the invitation card on the table.

- I no longer have Madame Forestier's necklace
- Her loving husband gave her all the money he had set aside to buy a gun. When the dress was ready, Mathilde’s husband saw that still she was not happy. In desperation he told her to borrow jewellery from her dear friend — Mrs. Forestier. Mathilde borrowed a diamond necklace from her.
- When they were finally in the street, they could not find a cab, At last they found old night cab. They were dropped off at their door in the Rue des Martyrs, and sadly walked up the steps to their apartment.
- She made the decision to glance in the mirror one last time when she got home. She was horrified to discover the jewelry was missing. When they couldn't find it anywhere, they wrote to Madame Forestier to let her know that the clasp was broken and that they would get the necklace fixed before returning it.
