The sickness took away Laura's vision and hearing. She became deaf and blind. Laura wore a black ribbon to cover her eyes. Laura's life was forever changed.
Laura became very unhappy and a very troubled child. She was prone to many outbursts and temper tantrums. Her parents, who were farmers, couldn't handle the hardship of raising a daughter who could not see or hear. They soon decided to send Laura away. Laura was sent to a school which was made specially for those who are blind.

Laura’s school director, Samuel Gridley Howe, wanted to educate Laura. He wanted her to be able to speak English like the other children. He spent many years helping Laura learn how to communicate and more.
Laura soon became able to communicate very efficiently. However, Laura continued to learn other things like math and history while living at the school. Once she learned to write, she soon began to send many letters to friends and family. She loved to write letters.
