  • My name is Ernestine Eckstein and I am a African American women who helped lead the the United States Lesbian and Gay rights movement. I was born on April 23, 1941 in Indiana. 
  • I graduated Indiana University in Bloomington in Indiana 1963. My degree was in Magazine Journalism with minor Government and Russian. 
  • Ernestine Eckstein the moved to New York, soon after her graduation in 1963. Upon moving she went into being a lesbian activist and working with the NAACP during the Black civil rights movement. 
  • Ernestine Eckstein was famous in 1965 being the first gay and lesbian in the picket line in front of the White House. Ernestine Eckstein carried a sign that said, “Denial of Equality of Opportunity is Immoral.” A year after the White House picket, Eckstein was the first Black woman to be on the cover of the iconic lesbian magazine
  • Ernestine Eckstein had an early activist in the Black feminist movement of the 1970s and the organization BWOA. Eckstein had argued for gays and lesbians to embrace the protest actions of the Black Civil Rights movement. 
  • Ernestine Eckstine  influence helped many feminist movements for female, gay organizations. She helped negotiate with medical professionals and towards tactics of public demonstrations.
