- Of course, I’m a first generation Asian immigrant, and come from a family of Tibetan refugees. My family mainly came to America in search of a better life for me, and eventually helped more members of my community and family to also move here.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

- In the case of my family and many others like us, we immigrate in hopes to achieve the American dream. In a lot of foreign countries, there’s a misconception fed by the media that America is full of opportunities that can just be handed out to anyone, and while in the US there are more ways to become successful than other places, immigrants aren’t necessarily the people who have the most advantage. According to the Pew Research Center, of the 24 million Asians living in the US, 2.3 million of those are on the poverty line, and nearly half are around middle class. Looking at this statistic broadly, this means that 1 out of every 10 Asian’s living in the U.S will end up in poverty, which is a far cry from what most immigrants who move expect.
- Could you tell me more about the reasoning behind why Asian immigrants decide to immigrate?

- In the Tibetan community, with most of us coming from a family of refugees or are a refugee, social justice is deeply rooted in the values that are taught to us. On March 10th of every year, Tibetans around the world participate in Tibetan uprising day, and protest against the unjust occupation of Tibet. Other forms of social activism are shown in cultural preservation, working to ensure that our unique traditions, language, and spiritual heritage continue to thrive.
