The pharisees had revealed that the women had been caught in the act of adultery. And in their laws they are supposed kill the women by being stoned.

They asked Jesus this to trap Jesus.
Jesus started writing on the floor.
Jesus told everyone that the person who never sinned could through the first stone. And since everyone sinned before. They were confused of what to do.
