  • Then, water molecules in the plant are split apart into oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen is released through the stomata into the air and the hydrogen is kept. Chloroplasts than get carbon dioxide from the air. The hydrogen and carbon dioxide are then combined to make sugar molecules which can be used as energy for plants and can be stored.
  • Plants contain chloroplasts--organelles--in the mesophyll cells of the leaves of that plant. These chloroplasts are able to absorb light because of the plant pigments they have. The most common pigment is chlorophyll, and it is needed in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is able to absorb light, and is the reason why plants are green--because it reflects green light. The light energy that gets trapped and stored and can be moved around.
  • The process of cellular respiration then continues in the mitochondria located in eukaryotic cells. The smaller molecules of sugar are broken down further and used alongside oxygen. Huge amounts of ATP molecules are made and cells use this energy to energize all cellular operations. These operations convert oxygen and the small sugar molecules into energy and excrete water and carbon dioxide as waste.
  • The first part of cellular respiration occurs in the cytoplasm of a cell. A process called glycolysis is performed when glucose is broken down into smaller parts. This produces ATP, an energy storage molecule. Glycolysis is fueled by energy from other ATP molecules.
