- In The Monsters are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling one of the main themes is Quickness to make decisions causes suspicion and destruction. The first event in the story that proves my theme is defensible on pg ------ is when Woman One makes a statement on what she saw from the days before as she slept late and observed that Les Goodman would stare at the sky as if he were waiting or looking for something . That caused people to ask him for explanations on why he did that action. This evidence shows my claim is rational because when that comment was made, more accusations and problems arose among the crowd making the circumstances even worse. Also, in the story on page ------ after Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn everyone goes crazy accusing each other and saying that some of them are working in teams. This shows my them is valid because if Charlie had took some time to think about what he was going to do or had at least tried communicating with the figure and listening to Steve he would have saved the life of someone they knew and caused less destruction. Lastly, the ending event on page ------ that shows my theme is sustainable is when Charlie says the boy, Tommy, is the guilty, unwelcome, scapegoat that they're looking for and then the crowd starts to reason and accuse back and forth between the chances of that being true while making the problem even bigger including the fact that they now have another person to blame all the guilt on. This shows my claim is sustainable because as Charlie brings up the possibility of Tommy being the intruder or unwelcome guy as a resolve more people start making claims on who's the alien, therefore causing more suggestions on the problem that has already started causing it to escalate even more. In conclusion, for the reasons stated above the best theme to represent the story would be, Quickness to make decisions causes suspicion and destruction.
