  • Ethos
  • I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their little villages and carried their thus saith the Lord far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left the cities of Tarsus and carried the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman world, so I am compelled to carry the Gospel of freedom beyond my own hometown.
  • King aligns himself with respected historical and religious figures, which enhances his credibility and ethical stance while explaining his presence in Birmingham as part of a greater moral duty. By connecting his actions to those of well-regarded leaders, he establishes his authority and the righteousness of his cause.
  • King tries to evoke strong emotions by highlighting the frustration and disappointment felt by African Americans when those who are not openly hostile to their cause still fail to take meaningful action. King's emotional appeal is meant to obtain empathy and provoke thoughtfulness among his audience, motivating them to recognize their own roles in the fight for justice.

  • Pathos
  • I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice.
  • Logos
  • Skluzavka: 3
  • Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
  • King highlights the interconnectedness of justice and the logical conclusion that if injustice exists in one place, it poses a risk to justice in all places. Thisreflect King's logical arguments for immediate action and civil misbehaviors in the fight for civil rights.
