As-salamu alaykum. I am your griot, Malik. Let me tell you the story of our great king, Mansa Musa and his famous hajj to Mecca.
The Beginning of the Hajj
In the 17th year of his reign, Mansa Musa, his senior wife and roughly 60,000 of his people set off on a journey across the Sahara.
My wife, the time has come. We must complete the hajj to Mecca to fulfill the requirement of the hajj.
The Journey Across the Sahara
It is said that Mansa Musa took 100 camel loads of gold, and 1000 servants carrying gold staffs. The estimate was about 18 tons of gold!

Arriving in Cairo
Upon arrival in Cairo, Mansa Musa showered the people with gold and gifts.
Mansa Musa went on his hajj to Mecca in the year 1324 AD. This would be the event that made him famous in the known world.
Economic Woes in Cairo
The great king gave us so much gold that he lowered the value of gold and caused artificial infltion.
Mansa Musa took 10,000 soldiers, 500 servants for himself and 500 for his senior wife, and 10s of thousands more people with him on his hajj, as well as an estimated 18 tons of gold. He also built several mosques along the way.
Arrival in Mecca and the Return Home
Mansa Musa ended up distributing every bit of gold he had and had to borrow money to make the return journey to Mali.
Honey, we gave it all away. I hope we can borrow some money to get back home.
Mansa Musa built many mosques on his journey and showered everyone he met with gold and gifts. However, he declined meetings with the local sultans as his journey was purely religious and he did not want to mix it with business and politics.
I think this would be a great place to build another mosque.
It was recorded by Al-Omari in 1334, that the Middle Eastern economy was still reeling from the economic struggles of having that much gold flooding the markets.
Mansa Musa's generosity actually had a negative effect on the economy.
This trip affected the economy of the Middle East for 12 years and inspired Mansa Musa to build new mosques, schools, and other public buildings in the cities of Gao and Timbuktu.
