The story of Gina's birth undoubtedly brought me to tears. I felt sympathy for her parents knowing the difficult journey that laid ahead of them, when it comes to raising a child with a life-threatening illness.
Gina's illness may be considered a disability to many, but her family views it as something special, allowing for a tremendous impart in awareness of her condition, and helping future special needs students.
Gina's story made me question myself and future techniques I could use as an educator. Family involvement plays a major role, and incorporating them into the classroom would be beneficial.
Parental support is crucial when working with special needs students. Aside from office hours where I could personally meet with parents, it's a great idea to involve them in the classroom, since they know their children better than anyone.
Interactive lessons make the classroom more fun and accessible, as we saw with Gina's aqua therapy and tricycle riding. These could be incorporated into my classroom as well!
I feel truly inspired after reading/hearing about Gina and Nikki's story. I look forward to all the ways in which I'll be able to make my classroom for accessible for student with special needs!
