- She was an enthusiastic Unionist and when the Civil war broke out, she enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Infantry. She worked many jobs in the army, a nurse, a mail carrier, and a spy.
- In 1857 Sarah Edmonds fled he home in Canada to escape an arranged marriage her father tried to force her into. In order to travel undetected and get a job, she disguised herself as a man named Franklin Thompson.
