CRUDE OIL/ILLEGAL OIL REFINERIES

Hi London, Yes I do know! Well first they are in the Niger Delta in Nigeria.
Hey Gabi, I keep seeing all of these things in the news about illegal oil refineries but I on't understand what they are. Do you?
An Illegal oil refinery will distill diesel from crude oil (petroleum) by heating it over an open flame. Many of the workers die from the explosions it can cause. It causes these explosions because of the temperatures they heat it to and the basic equipment they use.

The problem with this is that for about 50 years foreign companies have been making billions of dollars of oil. But the people in the Delta are living in harsh poverty.
I've heard Nigeria is the fifth- largest oil exporter for the USA. Is that true?

I think the USA is relevant because if a war were to break out in the Niger Delta our oil exportation would stop and that could cause a decline in our economy
I suppose that makes sense....
How is any of this relevant to the USA though? Do you think something bad could happen?
Hopefully not. However in the past, when the people of the Niger Delta have tried to fight against their suffering the government has responded in a cruel manner.
