Storyboard Text

  • I'm so excited!
  • There's so much snow this year!
  • Why is nobody else here?
  • We have the whole trail to ourselves!
  • Will we make it to the top?
  • Skiing uphill is so tiring!
  • The storm's getting worse, let's head back.
  • Lunch tastes better in the snow!
  • My mom, brother, and I are very excited to arrive at the cross-country skiing trailhead. The path, an old forest service road, is a winter wonderland, and is covered with several feet of fresh snow - much higher than the year before.
  • Whee!
  • I'm going so fast!
  • After putting on our skis, we start out on the windy trail. Immediately, I am excited that we are the first ones to ski on two feet of fresh, new powder. My mom, however, is preoccupied with the isolation of the trail, with not a soul in sight.
  •
  • Soon, the trail becomes steeper, making the journey much more difficult. My heart pounds in my chest with every stride through the deep snow, while my mom begins to doubt if we will reach the mountaintop.
  • This is so much fun!
  • Finally, after the long climb up the mountain, we reach a collection of small, abandoned buildings nicknamed bunkhouses. While my brother and I enjoy relaxing and eating our picnic lunch, my mom, noticing the change in the weather, alerts us that we need to head back down.
  • That was fun! Now let's head to the cabin!
  • Glad we made it back safe and sound!
  • We quickly descend the mountain and make the journey back to the trailhead. It feels as if we are on a roller coaster as we effortlessly speed down the mountain, although my mom is more cautious of the dangers of such speeds, deciding to ski slower.
  • As the weather continues to deteriorate, my mom begins to imagine catastrophized versions of the situation. She even worries about our skiing triggering an avalanche that would sweep us all off the face of the mountain.
  • I, however, feel a rush of excitement as I speed down the hill, completely unaware of any possible dangers. It is as if, as Tim O'Brien puts it in his novel The Things They Carried, the angles of vision are skewed (68), and, due to my carefree, youthful attitude, I see fun instead of the danger my mom envisions.
  • Finally, after several hours, we arrive back at our car at the trailhead. While we all feel exhausted, my brother and I have a sense of satisfaction after completing such a difficult trail. My mom, however, experiences relief and happiness from us all making it back safely.
