- Often times, field workers would sing and dance in order to either communicate to other slaves. The use of drums was banned after Stono, so American Juba was developed
- Early AA Musical Forms developed from enslaved African musical culture. This included polyrhythms, harmonization, different uses of percussion, and call and response among other things
- Jazz would become the most prevalent form of AA expression through music with artists like Louis Armstrong and Count Basies Big Band and jazz clubs for listening
- In the 50’s and 60’s, both RB and Rock grew as white artists main streamed more black music. In 1959, the most impactful record company, Motown Records was founded
- Ragtime and Blues stayed in the forefront of African-American music, but soon jazz and a more refined version of blues would develop
- African-American field songs then developed into Gospel as enslaved Africans were converted to Christianity and became more prevalent during the Second Great Awakening
- Post-Civil war, AA gospel transitioned in the Reconstruction Era and turned into Jubilee, Blues, and Ragtime
- Following the 70’s, black artists became more mainstream, with the development mainstream pop music and streaming services like MTV
- Jazz and Blues would develop further throughout the years. Cool jazz, bebop, and other subtypes of jazz music would develop through increased listener appeal. R B (Rythm and Blues) would develop as a sub genre of the Blues and help to develop Rock and later on, rap
- Out of evolving blues rhythm, early rock n’ roll, developed by pioneers such as Louis Jordan, was incorporated for white audiences by Bill Haley and Elvis Presley
- British Invasion did black artist off the charts, but soul and funk, developed by Motown began to grow. Funk and rock took off, and pop developed
- In the 80’s and 90’s the rap scene began to develop after the isolation of percussive beats from RB music and has slowly become more lyrical and pop like in their melodies
