- When the narrator says this, he is describing the siblings overall mental wealth being to the house, so when their mental health worsens, the house falls apart.

- This is a metaphor by saying that the evil things they face come I "robes of sorrow" so a large amount. And Rodrick sings in a happy state of mind during the saying.
