Today class, we will be talking about the Angola crisis. Angola has had a lot of conflict due to many different groups like the MPLA, a communist organization, and UNITA, a Natinal Union, fighting for power after gaining independence from Portugal. Along with the internal conflict, countries like the United States and Soviet Union provided support for each side since Angola was a mineral rich country, so they wanted their side to win.

Okay, let me explain. The United States and China helped support the FNLA and UNITA while the Soviet Union assisted the MPLA during fighting. The summer of 1975 MPLA was able to consolidate power and outs FNLA from the capital.

Yeah and don't forget that MPLA had assistance from Cuba since they had long relationship with Castro.

Yeah well while I was reading I learned that the loss in Angola for the United Sates as well as other conflict in Afghanistan and The Horn of Africa caused the undoing of detente between the U.S and Soviet Union. Also the war caused many deaths and important building in Angola to be ruined like hospitals and schools. Overall the war had a very negative impact on Angola.
What we learned about in class was actually really cool once I understood what happened, but she never told us what happened after.
