POPULATION: The Painted Lady butterfly population inhabits the snowy lands of Antarctica. Pictured above is five of the many butterflies. Their wings are a white color that blends in with the snow.
TIME/OVER-REPRODUCTION/VARIATION: Over time, the butterfly population begins to reproduce. Due to over-reproduction, a mutation occurs in the production process, a butterfly with yellow wings is created which creates variety in wing color.
SELECTION/SURVIVAL: A population of wolves is born. Because of their bright wings, the monarch butterfly population were easier to spot and became prone to attack by the wolves.
ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE: Over time, the snow begins to melt due to global warming and is replaced by a beautiful meadow filled with flowers. The Painted Lady butterfly population still remains on the land.
SELECTION/SURVIVAL: Because the orange butterfly population is able to blend in with the new environment better, the white butterflies are now more pronte to attack and die.
TIME: Over time, the Painted Lady butterfly species grows and now only has yellow wings. This is because natural selection favored their trait over the butterflies with white wings and made them more prone to death.
