Four hundred years ago, the first English settlers came to America in search of gold,silver, and a waterway to asia. They were called American colonists. American colonist where people who moved away from England to work in America. They never found what they were looking for so the first settlers had a rough time and had to eat rats and even had to eat each other so they didn't starve to death.

The King of England probably thought he had a good deal, as others endured hardships to settle new lands while he sat in his palace ruling England but he didn’t realize being kind wasn’t what it used to be back in the 1200’s. People had representatives in Parliament who made laws and stood up for people's rights and they even gave advice to the king.

In America, the colonists needed a government to handle everyday issues because the king was on the other side of the ocean. The mid 1700’s there were 13 colonies and each of them had their own government. These colonies got used to being in control so when all of the issues came up they took care of things themself so they came up with a solution and their solution were to sigh a compact which meant they agreed to a form a majority-rule government where all the men would vote on whatever issues came up. But the kings still had some control
