On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S Grant, officially ending the American Civil War, which had claimed the lives of up to three-quarters of a million people.

 The antislavery Republican Party's presidential nominee, Abraham Lincoln, is elected. As a result, 11 Southern states secede from the Union between December 1860 and April 1861. He served as America's 16th president.

The First Battle of Bull Run, also known as the Battle of Manassas, was the American Civil War's first main battle. Union and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia, on July 21, 1861.
When each of the seceded states returned to the Union and recognized the terms on which it was founded, justice was finally achieved. This included adopting the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States in January 1865.
Reconstruction (1865-1877) was the effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly liberated people into the United States following the Civil War.
