Exposition
the school house is of one room and is usually used for teaching children of all ages but today Ichabod crane is instructing Katrina Van Tassel in singing lessons. Brom Van Brunt watches on frustrated. This takes place later in the day but before dark in the small village of sleepy hollow. The horses are tied up in the back.

Conflict
Brom and Ichabod have a large dispute over katrina. They both want to get with her, but Ichabod is just a skinny school teacher and Brom is a handsome strong man. So ichabod knows he won't win in a fight for her so instead they argue a little and he minds his own business except for making his advances during their private lessons. The only problem is that Brom is not one to give up. instead he plays pranks on ichabod that make him look bad so that he can have Katrina.

Rising action.
Ichabod along with most people in town received an invitation to a party at the Van Tassel farm. He arrived looking his best after sending the school children home early at the excitement of the party. He Rode on his neighbors horse gunpowder to the party hoping to court Katrina. While he awaits for Katrina to be alone he dances and makes idle talk with people once the dancing dies down. It is implied that he gets rejected at the end of the party and rides back in the dark alone pondering of the ghost stories that were discussed at the party.
