"Lighten up, Stella. It's just life. It'll be over before we know it" (16).
Stella is a long-term Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patient who is very organized in order to survive. She then meets Will who is polar opposite and doesn't wear a mask, nor stay the distance they are told in order to keep themselves safe. Will has a special form of CF, B cepcia which is highly contagious and very deadly. Stella then confronts Will about not following safety precautions.

"We can't have a lot of things. But we can have this" (126).
"I'm tired of living without really living" (125).
"Six feet apart isn't enough for me anymore. I want five" (127).
At this point Stella and Will have spent weeks talking from a distance while building an emotional connection. After the death of their friend Poe, Stella realizes how short life is. She later meets Will and has one thing that the disease hasn't taken from them, their relationship.

"I don;t care about six feet anymore. I'm not losing you" (223).
Stella and Will leave the hospital to see the lights she has always wanted. But Stella slips into a frozen pond. Despite the infection risk Will jumps in to save her putting love before the danger that my come with it.
"If this is all we get, then i'm glad it's with you" (225).
