  • The Infection (Flu)
  • I have the flu
  • *cough*

  • The Infection (Flu) Part 2
  • Skluzavka: 3
  • Non-Immune Response
  • The mucus and hairs found in the nasal cavity and sinuses can trap bacteria and viruses
  • Salivary enzymes work to break down viruses before the go further into the body.

  • Onset of Symptoms
  • I don't feel so good...

  • Innate Immune Cells
  • Dendritic Cells: populate tissues, like the skin, that contact the environment. They stimulate adaptive immunity against pathogens that they engulf.
  • Eosinophils: usually found beneath an epithelium, are important against multicellular invaders, such as parasitic worms. Upon encountering such parasites, eosinophils discharge destructive enzymes.
  • Natural killer cells: Detect abnormal surface proteins found on some virus-infected and cancerous cells. They do not engulf stricken cells. Instead, they release chemicals that lead to cell death, inhibiting spread of the virus or cancer.
  • Mast cells: Found in connective tissue and make key contributions to the inflammatory response, described next, as well as to allergies, discussed later.
  • Skluzavka: 6
  • Inflammatory Response
  • As the immune system fights the virus, temperature spikes causing fever and aching
  • Skluzavka: 7
  • If only he'd gotten a vaccine, since his body would have made memory cells to fight the flu, and it wouldn't be so severe.
  • Skluzavka: 8
  • B and T Cells
  • His body's T and B cells are fighting the influenza. The B cells create antibodies, which bind to the virus and mark it for destructionKiller T cells identify infected cells and destroy them, preventing viral spread.
  • Skluzavka: 9
  • Recovery
  • It's nice to go home
  • Let's stop at the pharmacy first honey so I can get vaccinated
  • He survived the virus, and much of the immune cells responsible for his recovery are now dead and gone. But his body has created memory B and T cells, so if he comes across the same virus, his body will be better prepared.
