Natural Selection Storyboard Project

Storyboard Text

  • Starting Population
  • Variation
  • Change to Environment
  • The small mouse species, Mus musculus, lives inside an attic through leftover grains, fruits, and seeds. Around the attic, there are many holes and boxes that the house mice try to hide from their predators. The mice love their new home that provides warmth, so they will begin to nest and burrow.
  • New Competition
  • The mouse population increases inside the attic. Some of the house mice have huge ears with a larger auricle or outer ear. However, some of the mice have tiny ears with a smaller auricle.
  • Different Survival
  • Unfortunately, cats that linger below notice the house mice inside the attic. The hungry cats try to consume any of the mice that are exposed.
  • Adaptation
  • The house mice scatter away throughout the attic. Most of the mice are competing to stay hidden from the hungry cats.
  • The house mice with smaller ears are unable to hear the cats in time to react and are exposed. They are immediately eaten by the hungry cats. However, the mice with larger ears hear the cats, so they are able to avoid them.
  • The house mice that survived from the hungry cats continue to reproduce. They pass their useful large ear traits to their offspring. Ultimately, the house mice population would have large ears throughout the next generations.
