Elizabeth Allen did not plan on becoming a nurse. Throughout school, Allen planned on becoming a civil engineer. However, in high school, she realized that becoming a civil engineer was not an achievable goal for her and decided to settle on becoming a nurse.
Elizabeth's remembers her family members who have served in the military
Allen graduated from Ohio State University. She obtained a Master’s in Psychiatric nursing.

Instead of finding a nursing job in America, Allen enlisted in the military. She faced critism after making her decision. Prior to graduating, a staff member from her college wondered why she made this choice.
Allen was a minority onboard
Allen decided to go into the military because she had family that were in the military. Her grandfather and uncle had previously served. Her brother was also currently in the Navy. Knowing that not African Americans were in the nursing field but many were in the war encouraged her to serve.
Allen trained in Fort Sam in Houston, Texas. She was also sworn in as captain. She was offered positions prior to making her final decision, however she did not accept them. Finally, in 1967 Allen requested to be sent to Vietnam .

Allen flew to Vietnam after finishing Officer Candidate School. While on board, Allen was a minority. She was one of eight women there. She was also the only black person on board.
