- ORIGINAL ENCOUNTER
- I hope she can take care of me well because the nurses I have encountered before approached me arrogantly.

- EMERGING IDENTITIES
- I feel restless. I have trouble going to sleep. I have less than 4 hours of sleep for the past few days.
- Oh, she seems nice and willing to help me get better
- Hi Victoria! I'm Nurse Marie. I'm here to get to know you so I can take care of you well. How are you feeling?
- Victoria, a 19-year old college student is admitted to the hospital due to sleeping problems caused by academic stress.
- EMPATHY
- Midterms is fast-approaching, I have to work extra hard to make up for my pre-lims grade. I've been so stressed about it that I choose to study than sleep.
- I understand the feeling. I was also once a student like you back when I was in college. I had that kind of lifestyle too.
- During their first interaction, the nurse and the patient had first impressions of each other that shows that there is no trusting relationship yet.
- SYMPATHY
- It's good that you want to make up for your grade. But sacrificing your health will have long-term consequences. For you to improve your academic performance, you also need to take care of yourself.
- Because of the nurse's first approach, the atmosphere between the patient and nurse became warm that started the building of their relationship and bond.
- RAPPORT
- AFTER A FEW DAYS...
- Thank you, Nurse Marie. I feel better now because of your advices and care that you have given me for the past few days. I realized that there is nothing more important than my health.
- The patient had now shared her feelings and experiences that led to why she was hospitalized. Similarities of the nurse's student life before to the patient's present situation will help them have a therapeutic relationship.
- The nurse showed her willingness to help the patient through her recommendations. The nurse used intellectual approach and therapeutic use of self to alleviate the patient's situation.
- After a few days of the nurse's continuous care in alleviating the suffering of the patient, therapeutic goal of the nurse has been accomplished and a trusting relationship was formed.
