land in the south was perfect for growing cash crops, like cotton. And so with their massive slave population it was one of the main produce of the south, and the cotton gin was invented, and let farmers be able to process even more cotton, so more slaves were bought.
but we only get more work, even since you got a cotton gin, we've only had more work
the soil down here in the south is so plentiful! i could never get sick of this landscape, or these crops!

Planter families were often heavily organized, the children having arranged marriages. At which, slaves were often given as gifts.
That doesn't matter, this is for business. Perhaps you will get some new slaves as a gift.
But father, I barely know him! I don't want to marry him.
slaves made up the largest amount of the southern population, followed by poor farmers who could not afford slaves. then, the second smallest population, small farmers who could afford a few slaves. then, finally, the small amount of plantation owners who owned a majority of slaves.
at least you have the money for some, me and my family do all the work ourselves.
us slaves make up the largest population here in the south, why do we still have the least rights?...
I cant believe how many slaves those plantation owners keep, what if they rebel? And they did none of the hard work like we have.
in 1850, there was a fugitive slave act which ruled anyone suspected of being a slave could be arrested, even in the north. There was also the Dread Scott ruling on top of that, which ruled that slaves were purely property and not citizens, meaning they had no rights.
ever since the fugitive slave act was passed, we barely have to worry about slaves running away! we can just get them back.
Yeah! And with that Dread Scott ruling, we barely have to worry about the federal government taking our slaves away.
slaves were allowed and encouraged to attend church and worship, but the owners often used the bible and religion to claim they had a right to enslave them.
im happy that our master still lets us go to church, but isnt this one of his excuses for keeping us enslaved?...
yeah, i feel weird going to the same thing that supposedly condemns us for existing and supports keeping us enslaved...
