Ceyx ruled his realm justly and peacefully. Gods and mortals alike loved Alcyone and Ceyx for their remarkable physical beauty as well as their deep love for each other. They were so happy in their marriage that they jokingly referred to each other as Zeus and Hera.
One day, Ceyx decided to travel across the sea to consult the oracle of Delphi. Alcyone begged her husband not  to go or she will accompany him, which Ceyx still refused and left her in Thessaly. 
Ceyx only traveled a short distanced when the wind blow violently and tossed the ship they were riding, killing Ceyx and his crew. 
Hera, Queen of Gods, felt profound sorrow for trgicfate of Ceyx. She send her messenger Iris, to look for Hypnos and assigned to gently inform Alcyone about her husband's tragic death. 
In profound grief, Alcyone ran to the seashore and suddenly beheld her husband's body being washed ashore. After performing the last rites, she drowned herself to join his husband in the afterlife. 
The gods on Olympus were profoundly affected by the tragic fate of Alcyone and Ceyx, as well as their wonderful love for one other which not even the frosty hands of death could extinguish. In order to atone for his rash action that was responsible for this tragedy, Zeus transformed the couple into the Halcyon birds (kingfisher).
