- "Paul Tillich has said that sin is seperation. Is not segregation an existensial expression of mans tragic seperation?"
- King here is referring to Paul Tillich, a German American christian philosopher, which supports his claim because it shows reliability in this topic. Given that philosophers throughout history have been very intelligent and trustworthy sources, this gives meaning to King's words that was not previously there due to the newfound established trust of his knowledge to this topic.

- "When you have seen hate filled policeman curse, kick, and even kill your black brothers and sisters;"
- King uses pathos many times within his speeches and his writings. Pathos is a form of language that evokes a strong emotional reaction out of someone, and provokes a deeper level of thought on the topic. This can be beneficial in many ways because it helps to control the listeners/readers emotions. This helps because if you have someone feeling what you want them to feel, it will be a lot easier to persuade them on your topic. Here, King uses the fact that many policeman have killed his black brothers and sisters out of the hate and racism in their heart, which is something so tragic it makes you almost need to be on his side.

- "Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust."
- King here is using logos to give justification for disobeying unjust laws. Using logos helps him to convince others because logic is the best reasoning one can have. If something is logically wrong, it is an objective truth, because logic is the ultimate form of reasoning that helps a person come to a conclusion that makes sense. Therefore, using logos gives clear and comprehensible reasoning that convinces your listener using just facts, which are irrefutable and impossible to argue with.
