- The door clangs behind you and a little flake of rusted metal drifts down from the doorframe. You leave Moe’s Cafe, elated after just purchasing it for only twenty dollars. Behind you, Moe, the owner and head chef, exits the cafe, loosening his Polo Ralph Lauren shirt collar. His dog Barney, a white and brown Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, wags his tail and trots beside Moe. The waitress, Blanche, also leaves, untying her Moe’s Cafe apron. They walk ahead of you and cross the street, which is still damp from the previous rain. Two cars sound. Moe opens the door to a black Honda Accord and sits down. Barney scampers into the backseat. Blanche walks a little further to the left and the headlights of a Toyota Prius flash. The two cars drive off, disappearing into the fog.
- You are about to cross the road when subconsciously you look down and see a paper wedged between the door of Moe’s café. You walk over and take it. The paper is wrinkled and partially ripped, though still distinguishable. It has a light yellow color, the edges crumpled and creased. It depicts a curved dotted line that extends from the words MOE’S CAFE and ends at a depiction of the La Boulangerie Bakery.
- Intrigued, you begin to follow it. It leads you through a deserted alley, across an unpopular local road, and onto another street. The La Boulangerie Bakery is right ahead of you. It is closed, but you look at the french-style glass door. They have several laminated certificates posted upon the door. You lean forward and look closer. One of the certificates that validates that the bakery had the best croissants of the past year has a slightly darker color than the rest of the awards. Your eyes go wide as you notice that there is something behind it! Carefully, you peel off the strips of tape that hold the certificate in place and remove it from the door. Another paper falls out, the same one as the map you hold in your hand!
- Your excitement begins to increase as you pick it up. The map is identical to the one you currently have, but now a dotted line emerges from the La Boulangerie bakery into the local hardware store, Aubuchon Hardware. You begin walking and in five minutes that pass in the blink of an eye, arrive. But you observe that the line actually curves around the hardware store and ends behind it. There is a gate blocking your path, a corroded, jagged, six-foot-tall piece of metal but the padlock is open and you push the gate aside. Not taking your eyes off the map, you walk over to the exact position where the dotted line ends.
- There is not much behind the hardware store. The ground is covered in cracked pavement with small weeds sprouting through the cracks. Three trash cans full of bulging bags stand to the side, a dirty shovel leaning against one of them. The shovel is speckled with clumps of dirt and is a dark gray color. You recall every story that you know with a plot intertwined with a treasure map. In almost every scenario, you had to dig into the earth. You take the shovel and start. After you uncover a three-foot hole, your metal shovel clinks upon something. Fastening your pace, you turn over more of the ground to reveal a chest! You, fueled by adrenaline and excitement, heave the chest out of the ground.
- The chest is a brown container, about forty inches wide and thirty inches high. It has no lock but the top is curved. You throw it open and stare bedazzled. The chest is not filled with sparkling rubies and diamonds and emeralds, gleaming bars of solid gold that shine in the light, or wads of crisp hundred-dollar bills, but instead, a single item: a key.You lift the key out of the chest and inspect it. It is your average key; gray metal, about an inch in size, the side resembling a row of tiny metal teeth. But there is an inscription upon its side. It reads 'MOE'S CAFE'.
