  • The prison reform of the 1840's. When people in the U.S were fighting for a change in the jails.
  • I only need to owe money to the government.
  • I'll try and help you guys, don't worry.
  • Prisoners in jails were being beaten, abused, and starved. This includes people in mental center's too, they were put in cages and closets. If not behaving in the overcrowded jails, they were wiped. 
  • No more chains!
  • Prisoners also included debaters, these are people who did not pay the money to the government. Many of these debaters were in these prisons for years even though they needed to owe under $20's. They were being treated the same as murders including children who committed a crime. 
  • I'm glad to see you look happier and better!

  • A women named Dorothea Dix, saw this happen while teaching in these prisons. She recorded everything she saw and when she finally had enough information she turned it into the Massachusetts legislature. They were shocked and the legislature created a public asylum's for the mentally ill.  
  • When the state legislature passed the law, so people in prison's no long had to be in chains, or beaten. This all happened because of Dix and her actions taken to help these people. 
  • Now, when Dix would come to see the prisoners', they were doing better then they were.
