- He performed more experiments and in 1801 he published a treatise called “On the Origin of the Vaccine Inoculation.” In it he described his work and stated that he hoped “the annihilation of the smallpox, the most dreadful scourge of the human species, must be the final result of this practice.”
- During the following years, vaccination became accepted, and replaced variolation. And, the virus used to make the vaccine changed from cowpox to the vaccinia.

- On May 8th, 1980, smallpox was officially declared eradicated from the earth, the first disease to have been done so to. And with that, smallpox was no more.
