Inciting Incident
Rising Action
In this scene, while they were sailing towards Rio, Whitney is speaking to Rainsford about an island that old mappers used to call ship-trap island and how it's a mystery. Whitney talks about how there have been many superstitions about the island over the years and how sailors have dreaded the island. During their conversation, Whitney talks about how he thinks animals can think or reason, but Rainsford just tells him to stop talking nonsense.
Climax
In the middle of the night while Rainsford was smoking, he heard a 3 shots of a pistol. Startled, Rainsford jumped up from his seat and moved quickly towards the rail to try and spot who fired the gun. But because it was so dark, Rainsford stood on the rail to get higher elevation. But while climbing the rail, his smoker fell and while trying to grab it Rainsford fell overboard.
Falling Action
He had never slept in a better bed. Rainsford decided.
General Zaroff talks to Rainsford how the sailor he was hunting earlier that day left such an easy trail to follow. Zaroff also mentions how his old complaint, boredom has returned. After this, the general comes up with the idea, instead of hunting with Rainsford, he shall hunt Rainsford. His brains against his. Rainsford skills against his. It was the perfect game according to the General. At first Rainsford refused but then the general offered that he hand Rainsford to Ivan. Who has his own idea of a game.
Resolution
After their talk the night before, Rainsford started the game by making multiple long-winding trails for the General to follow. Next he constructed a Malay mancatcher which slightly injured General Zaroff's shoulder. Afterwards Rainsford entered the Deathswamp and created a pit full of spikes and a fake tarp. It only took one of Zaroff's hounds. Next another trap was set up which once set up, killed Ivan who was holding the dogs. Finally, Rainsford saw the sea past a wave of trees and he jumped in. 20 feet above General Zaroff and his pack of dogs came to the shore. After not spotting Rainsford he merely shrugged and walk backed into the deep jungke
some time after, the General was having an almost perfect dinner that night. But 2 annoyances continued to bother him. The first was that he was going to have a tough time replacing Ivan. The other annoyance was that Rainsford had escaped him. At 10:00 pm Zaroff went to his room where he said better luck next time to the hound. After switching on the light, a man appeared from under the curtains of the bed. Rainsford said, I am still a beast at bay. and challenged the General to a fight. At this comment he responded, Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford.
The story doesn't really explain what happens. But from the last sentence we can confirm this. That Rainsford had won the fight. We know this because in the text it says, He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.
