Separating Mixtures Part 1

Storyboard Text

  • Good morning, class. We will use our time today for your group presentations. Group 1, please come in front when you're ready.
  • Good morning, everyone. We are group 1 and today we will be sharing 8 methods of separating mixtures.
  • First, we have decantation.
  • Decantation is the process of pouring a liquid from one container to another to separate the liquid from solids or denser liquids. The solids or denser liquids are left at the bottom of the original container .
  • Next, we have filtration.
  • Filtration is the process of separating solids from a liquid by pouring the mixture through a porous material such as filter paper. The solid particles are left on the filter paper while the liquid passes through and is collected in a container at the bottom of the filter. Thus, achieving separation.
  • The 3rd method is centrifugation.
  • As you can see, centrifugation uses centrifugal force to separate particles from a solution, wherein, the denser particles settle at the bottom of the container.
  • For the next and 4th method, we have distillation.
  • Distillation uses both evaporation and condensation to separate liquids that have different boiling points. The liquid with the lower boiling point evaporates 1st, passes through a tube where it cools off, condenses back into its liquid state, and is collected in another container at the other end of the tube.
