Hi class, today we will be learning about the Dahomey Women Warriors and the importance of their narratives. A man named Stanley Alpern made some very negative narratives about the Dahomey Women Warriors, and they must be challenged.
We also have a special guest to tell you about it!
In Alpern’s historical interpretation of the Dahomey Women Warriors he overtly sexualizes and dehumanizes the women. This is a large issues as why Black women authoring their own narratives is so important. As well as Alpern, sometimes Black men try to author Black women’s stories and the issue persists.

However, in Black Panther: World of Wakanda Vol. 1: Dawn of the Midnight Angels created by a Black woman named Roxanne Gay in 2017, the Dora Milaje are depicted in a much more humane way that is not through the male gaze. In Gay’s comic the Dora Milaje are strong women of the community and although they do still show a lot of skin it is not in a dehumanizing or sexualizing manner.
This completely combats Alpern’s rhetoric about the Dahomey Women Warriors. The woman are sexy but not sexualized and that shows the difference between Black women authoring their narratives versus someone else.
