Storyboard Text

  • Proton: My friend, I have a question
  • Nuetron: Oh , What is it?
  • P: Why do metal rail tracks have gaps? What makes the liquid in the thermometer move?
  • Why don't we pump car tires to maximum pressure on hotter days?
  • But the reason for every thing is because of heat.
  • N: You are really very observant and curious.
  • P: Oh? really?
  • What does heat do on solids?
  • :There is a relative increase in the size of solids when heated.
  • N: Yes, heat has effects on the different states of matter.
  • When a solid is heated, its atoms vibrate faster about their fixed points.
  • P: Uhm , metal rail tracks are solid, is it the reason why they put gaps?
  • N: Yes, metal railway tracks have small gaps so that when the sun heats them, the tracks expand into these gaps and don't buckle/
  • P: What about in liquids?
  • N: Liquids expands for the same reason,
  • but because the bonds between separate molecules are usually less tight they expand more than solids.
  • P: Oh, is it the reason why the liquid in thermometer moves?
  • N: This is the principle behind liquid-in-glass thermometer. An increase in temperature results in the expansion of the liquid which means it rises up the glass.
