- Antigone believes she knows the will of the gods, and acts in direct contradiction of Creon’s decree. She wants to be a martyr.

- Sister, our uncle is the King. You must do as he says.
- Ismene, don't you think this is unfair!?
- Antigone sets herself above the laws of her king, unapologetically defying Creon.

- PERIPETEIA
- A plague will fall upon this land, hear this and be forewarned!
- Tiresias convinces Creon to free Antigone.

- ANAGNORISIS
- Antigone is to be set free at once!
- The audience knows what Antigone does not: Creon is on his way to pardon her.

- NEMESIS
- Antigone hangs herself before Creon can arrive.

- CATHARSIS
- The audience is sad that Antigone, Haemon, the Queen all died for Antigone's righteous pride. They recognize the same temptations to defy authority in their own lives.
