Hi I'm King Henry! I'm known as the Defender of the Faith.
B-but Pope Leo! I am in need of an heir!
I'm sorry Henry, but we can't afford a war with Spain.
I think I should have more authority than the Catholic Church!
I'm not telling him no
I'm not defying him, that would make him angry
Ugh, why can't he just stay married to me!
King Henry was born on the 28th of June, 1491 in the Palace of Placentia in London. He became king at 17 in 1509 when his older brother died and them married his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon. Henry was titled "Defender of the Faith" after ridiculing Martin Luther's 95 theses.
The Catholic Church can't stop us now
Now, we can all read the Bible ourselves!
Wow! I can read the Bible!
In desperation for a male heir, which Catherine could not give him, Henry sought to asking Pope Leo X for a divorce, in order to marry his pregnant mistress, Anne Boleyn. The Pope denied his divorce as Henry married the aunt of the Emperor of Spain, who was holding Pope Leo prisoner.
Ah finally a male heir. I am more powerful than the Pope!
I, Thomas Cranmer, allow King Henry to divorce Catherine of Aragon
Yes! I'm Queen of England
Protestantism wins!!!
Henry decided he didn't need the Pope's permission and that he alone should be the final authority in matters relating to the Catholic Church. Finally, Henry realised the power the Church had against all of England. As he was king, no one dared to tell him he was wrong.
Now remember, "whoever leads an auspicious life here and governs the commonwealth, as my most noble father did, who promoted all piety and banished ignorance, has a certain most way to heaven"- King Henry Viii
With the help of Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell, who were both protestants, Henry dissolved England's monasteries and confiscated their wealth and power, as well as translating a Bible to english so everyone could read it. And so, England broke away from the Roman Church.
After appointing Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury, Henry could finally divorce Catherine. The Roman Catholic Church couldn't stop England after they broke away. Henry had separated England from the Catholic Church all for a male heir. Protestantism had won in England.
Henry, like Jesus, believed that faith in God is what will bring you to heaven, as well as living a successful life under God and banishing ignorance. Henry took the Catholic Churches unfair power, which included selling indulgences and other "official" papers to grant you access to heaven.
