  • The Day that Changed My Life: Anthony Philips' Story By Jonathan Saunders 9EN4
  • What is happening?
  • Two planes have crashed into the twin towers.
  • September 11, 2001 was a significant day for New York and the world. It is a day that is still remembered as "9/11". It was the worst terrorist attack in history and began America's "War on Terror".
  • What is happening? Am I going to survive?
  • Osama Bin Larden ordered four planes to crash into landmarks on the US mainland, two into the World Trade Center towers in New York and one into the Pentagon in Washington DC. The last plane crashed before it reached its unknown destination.
  • I need a better look!
  • This is Anthony Phillips, a teacher at Shore Prep, and he was a survivor of the 9/11 attacks. Through this story Anthony explains the events and how they affected him.
  • I was in New York at the time with a friend and we went sightseeing. We had just finished university and we both had saved up enough money to take a trip to the US.
  • We were on our way to the Twin Towers (World Trade Center) on September 11. We were looking forward to seeing this famous landmark in Lower Manhattan. We had just got off the subway.
  • As we came up to street level there was a confused scene ahead. Someone informed me that two planes had hit the Twin Towers. Ahead of me there were rows and rows of looking up, watching.
  • As I was on my way to the Twin Towers there was a massive crowd. People were in awe and they were shocked. I didn't know what had happened - I was confused.
  • I wanted to get a better look at what was happening, so we walked closer to the buildings. They were on fire and debris and smoke was coming out.
  • We were shocked at what was taking place. We were 80 meters away from what was happening. After 20 minutes the towers started collapsing quickly and soon the air was filled with dust and debris.
  • As the towers began to collapse ,we started to run. We tried to find the best place to hide as quickly as possible.
  • It was hard to breathe. We had to get off the street. We came to a shop and we decided to jump through the window. We tried to hide under the counter.
  • The towers had fallen to the ground. We had survived. However we were both in shock at what had taken place. It is a memory that is still in my mind to this very day.
  • Anthony ended his story. His last words in the interview were his reflections about what the event had taught him.
  • He said that it taught him that he was fragile because at the time, as a young man, he thought at that time he was invincible. This made him think less about his safety which in return almost got himself killed.
  • It also taught him that he should be more careful about how he lived his life, as it could end at any moment. He needed to make the most of every day, as each day was precious.
  • Finally, the September 11 experience helped him to appreciate in a personal way the importance of the event and why it had such an impact on the American people.
