Josef and his family have decided to flee Germany before it was too late for them. They look forward to boarding the MS St. Lewis and seeing Josef and Ruthie’s father, but still have their doubts.
After Josef’s mother and sister doze off on the train, he gets bored and decides to explore the German side of the train. After letting himself go a bit, his Star of David slips right out of his pocket and lands on the floor. With just his luck, a member of Hitler youth is nearby.

After a mental breakdown, Josef’s father ends up jumping off the ship to escape the Germans who have a grudge against him.
When arriving in Cuba, they are not granted entry. They later found out they were being deported back to Germany.

After making a bargain with the captain, he promises them all that he would try his very hardest to get them into countries in Europe that wasn’t Germany.
We will try our very hardest to get you into countries along the coast of Europe instead of Germany.
But we will still be so close to Germany!
We will only take ONE child to the concentration camp!
When the German police caught up with the fleeing family, they gave the mother an offer. She would have to choose which child would be sent to a concentration camp along with herself.
