  • "Five score ago a great American is whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation...It came as joyous daybreak trend the long night of their captivity."(King)
  • Pathos
  • "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." (King)
  • Logos
  • WHITES ONLY
  • "But 100 years later the negro is still not free. One-hundred years later the life of the negro is still badly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination."(King)
  • King refers back to the great Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is a well known figure who is known to be trustworthy and honest. King uses Lincoln to convince people that it was wrong to have slaves. If people won't listen to King, they will listen to Lincoln.
  • Ethos
  • "When the architects our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir."(King)
  • King uses emotions to persuade people. He wants people to feel bad about the conditions for the kids. People don't want to be unkind to children. He uses innocent children being antagonized to make people feel bad so they will stop the discrimination.
  • Pathos
  • "We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their adulthood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "For whites only"."(King)
  • King states it has been 100 years and the negro still is not free. He uses the fact to show that the discrimination is not fair. He shows that it is unfair for nothing to have changed over a hundred years.
  • Logos
  • "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "Insufficient funds"."(King)
  • The architects are our founding fathers. People respect these people because they created our glorious country. King knows this so he uses them to get people to listen to him. People follow the rules of the Constitution, so King hopes they will follow that part too.
  • King once again uses kids. He combines them with harsh words like stripped and robbed to tug at your emotions. He makes you feel awful for mistreating the poor children. He makes you feel guilty so you will stop it.
  • King makes a metaphor with a bad check. He shows logic that the Negro people were promised something but they never got it in return. For this they would be frustrated and mad. It is logical for the to be mad because they were promised freedom but they never completely got it.
