  • May 1212 - Stephen of Cloyes, a 12 year old sheperd, went to the King Philip of France claiming that he had a letter from Christ telling him to organise a crusade. The King wasn’t impressed. However, by June, he had gathered 30,000 children between 11 and 15 to go on a crusade!
  • I have a letter from Christ telling me to organise a crusade.
  • NO!
  • As they marched south through France, they were greeted with cheers: they weren’t greedy knights or proud kings. They were simply innocent children doing God’s work.
  • MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!
  • WOO-HOO!!
  • YES!!GOOD CHILDREN OF GOD!!!
  • WOO-HOO!!
  • Every time they reached a big French town, they thought it was Jerusalem.
  • Is this Jerusalem?
  • No, this is Toulouse.
  • Many struggled due to exhaustion and shortages of food and water (this was before they even left France!).
  • WATER!
  • SLEEP!
  • FOOD!
  • Those kids have been gone for so long! Where are they!?
  • It was nearly 20 years before anything was heard of them again…
  • I don't know! Maybe they got lost...?
  • They managed to get onboard ships for free. 2 of the 7 ships sank off Italy. All were drowned. The other 5 were captured by pirates. The children were then sold as slaves in Algeria and Egypt. There is no record of the children ever returning home.
