She was born in San Francisco,CA, on November 7, 1946. But she#160;has been living on Bainbridge Island, Washington since 1980.
She is of mixed blood ancestry but she identifies with her father, who was of menominee ancestry. Her mother's heritage was Lithuanian/Alsace Lorraine.
Chrystos was self educated. The poetry she wrote was fiercely personal. Her relationship with her mother, father and other loved ones have a lot to do with her poetry. She would right about her mothers depression, the abuse of her as a child, etc.
Her words slide down our throats, nourish the hungry soul, fill the forlorn and homeless heart, Gloria Anzaldua says of Chyrstos' poetry. Our severed selves are reassembled with self-esteem thanks to her speech. It beckons us away from invisibility's death, insisting that we be seen and counted, no longer exiled, no longer vanishing. She howls inside of us, says the narrator.
Chrystos is still alive till this day and she lives in washington and she still writes her own poetry books. She also is and artist and designs her own covers for her books.#160;
