  • Mountain men were fur traders who lived on Oregon land and lived very careless and dangerous lives as hunters. They followed Native trails and showed these trails to settlers heading west.
  • Mexican-American War
  • This is our land not yours!!!
  • The Oregon Trail was a 2000 mile route from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon. It was used by thousands of pioneers to migrate through the west.
  • Mormons in Utah
  • Thank you god for giving us Utah.
  • The belief that the United States is destined to expand its land westward and spread its democracy throughout North America. It motivated many Americans to journey west.
  • California Gold Rush
  • The Mexican-American War started with Texas's annexation in 1836. Texas claimed that its boundaries extended to the Rio Grande, while Mexico claimed that its boundaries only extended to the Nueces River which is 100 miles eastward. This war influenced America's idea for Manifest Destiny even more.
  • This is America's land!!!
  • Mormons belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church was founded by Joseph Smit in 1830. In 1847, over 15,000 Mormons moved to Utah. They ended up colonizing most of Utah from Native Americans. They were one of the biggest groups to settle down in the Western Expansion.

  • In 1848, John Sutter was having a sawmill built until one of his workers found a chunk of gold in a river bed. News of gold in California sparked throughout the US. Over 80,000 people journey to California looking for gold. The gold rush brought many changes to California. At first, California was just filled with small towns and then after the gold rush, it became a bustling city.
